About Us
Sunflower Montessori has taught children ages two to six in Van Nuys since 1980. We're open year-round, 7:00am to 6:00pm, with full-time and part-time schedules plus extended day care, because a preschool that closes at noon doesn't work for most families. Our families come from Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, North Hollywood, Valley Village, Arleta, Lake Balboa, and Reseda.
Our facility is brand new. We rebuilt the classrooms and the outdoor play yard from the ground up, and the result is a space designed around how children actually move and work. Come see it in person.
We follow Dr. Maria Montessori's method as she designed it. Children work in a carefully prepared environment where they choose their own work and stay with it as long as it holds them. Our teachers don't lecture from the front of the room; they kneel beside your child, watch closely, and offer the next lesson when the child is ready for it.
INDEPENDENCE
A Montessori child chooses their own work. That small daily freedom builds something bigger: a child who can start a task, finish it, and put it away without being told.
DISCOVERY
Children learn to read by tracing sandpaper letters, and learn math by holding a thousand golden beads in their hands. Nothing stays abstract until a child has felt it first.
COMMUNITY
Our mixed-age classrooms mean a four-year-old teaches a three-year-old to tie a shoe, then watches a five-year-old read a book she'll be reading next year.
